For the occasion, I made these super fun but oh-so easy sugar skull cookies, inspired by our NEW Dia de Los Muertos printable decorations and invitations.
I LOVED the process so much, and even my daughter joined in the decorating fun! 😊
Sugar Skull Cookies Recipe
Whenever I design a party I always head to Pinterest first for inspiration - to see what is out there... aaaaand also what's not!
You see, I love coming up with novel ideas and twist on popular party themes, recipes or projects that may already be circulating on the net. It's my way of reinventing the "party wheel" and keeping content fresh and exciting for you guys! 😉
The same can be said for these sugar skull cookies. I saw some beautifully decorated cookies, with a kaleidoscope of colors and design on Pinterest, but the novice cookie-decorator that I am was dreading having to make up icing in ten different colors, and then pipe teeny, tiny details on each sugar cookie...
So I was inspired by the recent Halloween cake I made here on the blog, and used edible ink pens to draw on my cookies instead!
I must say, I haven't seen anyone doing sugar skull cookies this way yet, so perhaps I'm the first? In any case, they turned out so much better than I imagined!
Because this was a new technique for me, I was afraid the pens might not draw properly or bleed onto the royal icing. But it was literally child's play to decorate the cookies with these pens! So much so, that my daughter and I had a blast coming up with different designs for our skull cookies!
The other reason why I loved this technique so much, is that the actual cookie-decorating process is so therapeutic and would make for a super fun party activity, where guests also get to take their masterpieces home as party favors.
And you know how much I love food that doubles as entertainment AND as a gift! 😍 Check out the easy recipe below for these fun sugar skull cookies.
Oh, and I'm joining a bunch of bloggers this week to give you some ideas for Halloween, so if you're come from Dukes and Duchesses, welcome 😊 See all details of our Halloween blog hop at the end of the post!

Easy Sugar Skull Cookies
These sugar skull cookies are so delicious, super fun to make and decorate, and ideal for a Dia de Los Muertos party!
ingredients
- 1 batch of basic sugar cookie dough (recipe here: https://www.blog.birdsparty.com/2018/04/easy-decorated-flower-sugar-cookies.html)
- 1 batch of white royal icing (recipe here: https://www.blog.birdsparty.com/2018/04/easy-decorated-flower-sugar-cookies.html)
- skull cookie cutter (mine was about 3.5 in or 9 cm tall)
- edible ink pens of various colors, including black
instructions
- Make the cookie dough and cut out skull cookies using your cookie cutter. Bake according to the recipe and let it cool completely before icing.
- Ice the cooled cookies with white royal icing and let it dry fully overnight.
- Use a black edible ink pen to draw the skull decorations. You can use a template or draw freehand like I did.
- You can leave the cookies black and white (so chic!) or use colored edible ink pens to fill in the designs.

These are so cute! Such a good idea for an alternative to piping all those tiny details which can get so tedious sometimes! I love!
