A Modern Plaid Tartan Christmas Table
For Christmases past, I've done modern monochromatic, trendy millennial and golden chic for my table decorations. So this year, I wanted to create something a little more traditional, and was inspired by tartan or plaid for my table design.
Red is my favorite color, and I used it as a predominant shade in my holiday tablescape, alongside touches of green and gold for sparkle and a little modernity!
Keep reading to see how you can re-create this look at home for the holidays!
A Modern Plaid Tartan Christmas Table - Place Settings
To dress my table, I used a linen white tablecloth and a plaid tartan table runner. You could totally buy one ready made (see shopping list below) or go to your fabric store and get them to cut a runner straight from the bolt to fit your table measurements.
One easy technique for hemming any table runner (or cloth) in a flash, is to use no-sew hem tape. Seriously, it's a god-sent if you don't fancy getting the sewing machine out, which I didn't.
For each place setting, I always look to my menu courses for inspiration. In this case, I layered gold glitter chargers (is there anything more festive?), my trusty white "canvas" plates, wooden dessert plates for an earthy touch; and white bowl with gold rims, which are perfect for serving delicious soup starters, festive nibbles or desserts.
I love the height and different textures of each place-setting, which adds so much more interest to the eye than if everything looked flat and table-level.
To avoid the table decor looking too dark or too heavy on the plaid or tartan side, I opted for red napkins that matched the table decor, without making it look too busy.
To complement each setting, I used simple wine glasses and gold-rimmed water glasses, again to add a little more sparkle to the table decor.
To finish off each place-setting, I used my beloved white and gold flatware (link below), which I'm totally obsessed with!
A Modern Plaid Tartan Christmas Table - Centerpiece and Decor
For my table centerpiece I knew I wanted something easy to put together but that also packed the wow factor.
So I used a gold vase and filled with unscented red roses, red and white anemones, Gerbera daisies and faux holly berry branches.
For this particular floral arrangement, you don't need to be an expert or a florist. You simply cut the flowers stems to fit your vase, and arrange in a pleasing manner. Voila! 😉
When it's time to bring the food to the table, I like to remove the floral arrangement to a side table to make more room.
Alongside the floral centerpiece, I added gold candlestick and with gold taper candles in various heights.
I didn't want a symmetrical look, so I place the vase to the left and the candlesticks to the right of my table.
To frame each candlestick and echo the color palette and wreath decor behind my table, I made some mini rosemary wreaths and added them to the base. I love how it added a pop of green and another natural element to the table.
To finish the decor of that table, I hung a faux holly berry wreath with fairy lights, just behind the table to help bring all the elements together and add a little height to the ensemble.
A Modern Plaid Tartan Christmas Table - Holiday Bar Cart Styling
Christmas is the perfect time to deck out the bar cart in all its festive glory!
When catering for a crowd, like during the holidays, it's always a great idea to serve a big-batch cocktail or punch. It frees you up to let guests mingle and you have more time to enjoy the festivities alongside your guests!
This is where the holiday bar cart comes in SO handy - You simply place all the punch or cocktail ingredients at your guests disposal, and watch it be the center of the party!
For my holiday bar cart, I let the drinks speak for themselves, and double-duty as decor too! Apart from the gorgeous beverages on offer, I simply decorated the bar cart with another piece of my plaid tartan runner and some more fairy light, as you can never have enough fairy lights at Christmas, am I right?
I placed my festive punch in a clear glass punch bowl, and added a little rosemary sprig to each punch glass to act as stirrers. Such a simple idea that is so easy to replicate and instantly elevates any drink to "festive" status!
The punch is a non-alcoholic recipe that you can spike if desired! 😉 So I added a bottle of vodka to the side for guests to help themselves.
On the lower level of my holiday bar cart I displayed wine bottles and extra glasses to be ready and handy for serving guests, and finished off the decor with gold candle-holders that look so gorgeous lit in the evening!
The beauty of the bar cart is that you can wheel it to anywhere in the house. But if you don't have a bar cart, a small table, shelf or little kitchen corner will do the trick just fine!
Oh, and by the way, I'll be sharing the recipe for my delicious, go-to holiday punch next week, so be sure to subscribe to the blog so you don't miss it! 😉
A Modern Plaid Tartan Christmas Table - DIY Party Favors
For this tablescape, I simply filled mini gift boxes with Christmas cookies (you can make your own, or buy them and decant into the boxes for a quick and easy idea!). Another cute idea would be to fill them with chocolate. YUM!
Plus, it's such a nice surprise for guests to see that they're been treated to something special when they sit down for dinner! 😍
